How did you get into this industry?
I had been in accounting in another industry and was looking for a new job. I saw an advertisement run on behalf of my first credit union by the Colorado Credit Union League, applied and got the position. Since then it’s been steady promotions and opportunities to do more.
What is different about it than other things you’ve done?
The industry is unique – its mission is to help out members, so our very goal is to find better ways to serve the needs of the people we work with. That’s not a marketing slogan, but a fact based on the kind of business we are: our members’ financial success is our primary goal, and that’s a good feeling to know that service isn’t just a means to another end like profit.
How has your career progressed while in the credit union industry?
Obviously I’ve grown from a junior accountant to CEO in a short period of time. I think that kind of growth is possible for anyone if the philosophy of the industry fits and they’re willing to work hard to succeed.
Do you think your ideas matter more here than in other places where you’ve worked?
Yes. Most credit unions are small and there’s less politics than in big companies. We create ways to get better at what we do all the time. At my credit union, we have an open door policy that extends throughout the building – we hold each other accountable to doing our best and living out our standards, and that includes me along with everyone else.
If you could say one thing to a group of potential employees contemplating employment in the credit union business, what would it be?
I love, love, love what I do – I’ve never regretted for even one day that I work in this industry. If you want to serve people and make a difference for people one at a time, this is an industry where you can work hard and make a difference. |
